TILBURG UNCOVER ANOTHER GEM
SOME people said it was a marketing exercise to gain Tilburg vital contacts and shirt sales in the booming Asian market, others said it was because we were short of players and did anyone know any mates.
Either way Tilburg’s Asian wonderkid bagged his first goal at the weekend and showed that Tilburg is one step ahead of the competition when it comes to finding new talent.
It’s hard to believe that back in the summer a 14 year old school boy from the beaches of Colombo would attract the attention of Tilburg head scout John Heffernan.
There’s a reason why Heffernan has the reputation for being good with youth and Fernando is proof he’s still got ‘it’.
Heffernan recalls, “I’d be watching the boys for ages and I just didn’t see anything I fancied. Then I saw a young lad and I thought id like to see what he could do with a ball.”
"I had a closer look at him after that and I saw with my own eyes that he had a bit of everything, he could go deep, take it short and even when I brought him off because I thought he was getting tired he begged me to give him another go."
A few short weeks later and Fernando seems to have found his feet in his new home.
His first goal coming in only his 4th match, not bad for a utilities player. The noises coming out of Tilburg are that he really is ‘special’,
Bees manager Matt Wyatt described the goal as “unbelievable” and “mind boggling”.
A’s manager Stewart Todd has seen Fernando in training and is a known admirer of his languid style of play, describing him as an “effortless player”.
It wont be long before Fernando is knocking on the door and demanding to be let in to the As team.
How far could he go in the game? Time will tell but the lad has ambition “ I want to go to the very top, Jermaine Jenas is an example of where I can see myself in 3 years time, he has the lot.”.
In unrelated news Greg Krmadjian has stepped up his rehabilitation following last weekend and looks to be in contention for this Saturday, thus giving the manger a selection headache. “If I’m honest it’s a nice problem to have, I’ll probably go with the guys we’ve had in the side and use him (Krmadjian) as an impact player.” Said Bees manager Matt Wyatt.
